Four years ago I'd been DIYing modular stuff for a year or two at least and was having a lot of fun - but then I was faced with the challenge of how to take a system to Europe (on Easyjet). I ended up building this (built to the Easyjet musical instrument carry-on dimensions - of course, flying from the UK they totally DIDN'T let me carry it on...) and performed a 4am wobbly-techno set by a lake near Berlin for the Goldmund Festival - it was great.

The Modular has always been driven by what I desire from a live system and portability has always been a major concern for me. Since I started producing 'regular' systems, the size has come down a long way from the old DIY days, but my 4" deep Frames still felt a little cumbersome - and they actually held a lot of wasted space since I changed all module designs to the new Rev.2 status (using SMD parts).

So, when I was asked to return again to the same festival (now called Am Ende Der Wald - it really is the most magical event and location) I got the idea to produce a new system frame - the Shallow Frame. Not only does it cut down the depth by almost 50% (now only 2.3" deep) but I also spread out to the sides to produce a 16-width frame (2 foot wide) - why should I stay constrained by the original sizes dictated by 19" Racks when 95% of my frames DON'T get used in 19" Racks?! I really do see these new frames as the future! (Yes, they will be regular production cases, along with the current 11-width ones)

Here are the results - a 2FrameShallow setup, crammed to the gills with sonic & rhythmic power! Believe me, this system is seriously fun to play and constantly surprises with variety. And it is pretty portable too. If you want to catch the results, then I'll be playing around Midnight on the first night at the Space Opera Saloon. [Click the pics for larger versions]

[My niece also had a lot of fun with a Postcard Weevil from the age of 1year6months and I've heard similar from a few people. I'm always a bit surprised that they seem fine when putting the touch-plates in their mouths because that can certainly give a tingly little shock!]

At the start of April there will be a great event at the Cube Cinema in Bristol over two evenings - A Radiophonic Weekend - Sat 2nd and Sun 3rd April 2011.

Recently I asked the users of my BugModular systems to come up with short tracks inspired by the works of the Radiophonic Workshop to be played in between parts of the Cube weekend. You can listen to all the tracks via the MuffWiggler Forum Thread Here. The results are, though I say so myself, freaking amazing and highly varied.

Daren Ager has gone one step further and has compiled his tracks into an album which he is now offering at a super price of only £1.25 with ALL proceeds being donated to the Red Cross for the Japan Disaster Relief Fund. (You can also easily donate MORE if you'd like!)

Five years ago, back when I was making a load of Contact Mics, I soldered some guitar string offcuts onto the back of a C-mic and enjoyed the plinky fun sounds that resulted:

Recently someone reminded me of these and I thought I'd make a new version mounted in a little box. Here's a simple DIY guide to make your own (click images to enlarge):

It is a very simple setup - a c-mic mounted inside a little box with some guitar string pieces (c. 6" length) soldered on to the back of the c-mic.

I used some plain and some wound guitar strings of various diameters - you can experiment with different gauges and different lengths.

The only slightly tricky part is how to effectively solder the strings onto the back of the c-mic - what is important here is to get decent heat-transfer - make sure your soldering iron is as hot as it can be (I turn mine up full) and that it is clean.

- I first make a blob of solder on the back of the c-mic, about 1cm diameter

- I then tin the ends of the guitar strings

- clean the iron tip and re-tin it, but with quite a lot of solder

- now re-melt the solder blob and fuse in the guitar string

- repeat for all the other strings, spacing them very slightly apart from one another

- you can see in the 2nd image how I stripped back the ends of the wound strings to expose the plain central core

I mount strings onto the c-mic and then use epoxy resin (araldite etc) to fix the c-mic into the plastic case.

The Piezo element is just a standard 27mm piezo disc.

Making use of the E350 Morphing Terrarium kits from Synthesis Technology, I've made my own BugModular version with a few additions to the standard Euro module - inclusion of Mod-depth controls for X/Y/Z inputs and switches for the two option jumpers on the module rear (for Interpolation and Phase Mode).

It is great to have the wonderful power & sonics of the E350 in my system!

Since I never get the chance to 'record properly' any more, but I quite often record my playings with the BugModular, I wanted a place to store recordings that was super easy to use. So I chose Virb and have been uploading bits over the last month.

Have a listen!

What you'll hear is almost entirely:
- just BugModular
- recorded in one take, no preparation, in Mono and with minimal edits

There are a few bits that creep in with some quantizers and I've recently been hooking up a keyboard for Midi to CV -- but the vast majority of the tuning and rhythm is simply created with the modules and fine tweaking.

Granted, they're rough'n'ready, warts'n'all, but I hope this gives some idea of the sounds and flows of the BugModular and how I play the system.

BugModular - Standard Racks

Newly updated::: Rack Frames and Endcheeks.

Details are now given on the BugBrand Modular Accessories page for four standard setups - 19" RackMount and three desktop setups. No, they're not 'generally' available yet... (more info soon via the Modular Mailing List)

The racks have been redesigned from last year's work - now they're fabricated in 1.5mm aluminium so that they're not as heavy (good for shipping). The new EndCheek options allow very easy assembly and give really stable results - EndCheeks are plain 3mm alu for the RackMount and 4mm alu for the desktop setups.

As an initial proof-of-concept, racks can also be joined together to form larger units with a single EndCheek in a mid position:

A couple of VCOs with rhtyhmics generated by the CLK2A Division.
After a while I turned up the resonance on the PRC3 VCFilters and it went all swirly.

Demoing a pair of the new SYN2A VCOs -- but does it give a clear picture? Not particularly...!

Feb2010 - SYN2A Straight Sounds
This gives a better idea of the pure SYN2A sounds -- pure outputs with FM modulation from another VCO.

Feb2010 - More SYN2A and the wrong-proto CTL3
Something tuneful (quite) again using the new SYN2As but also with pitching from a proto CTL3 8-stage-preset module which needs some more TLC before proper announcement. This is driven by divisions from CLK2A modules. I let the recording run on into .......... plinks etc. from PRC3 VCFs.

And a couple which I can't remember much about - they must have been recorded Nov2009 and Jan2010 or there-abouts.. Kind of elongated, warts and all.. Some FM sounds in the Nov one for sure::

BugModular - rev2 Updates

As shown in the recent CLK2A Divisions post, I've been taking on some new techniques for Modular production. Along with the move towards Surface Mount I've also sourced special potentiometers for the new designs. I'd been wanting a vertically mounted type, but nothing quite fitted my requirements, so....

The module designs from last year will gradually be updated to incorporate these changes - and there may be some alterations along the way..

For example, the update of the SYN2A changes name to the Utility VCO and replaces the sine wave with a new ramp(ish) wave with waveshaping (same control as for PWM). See below for scope shots of the ramp wave shaping - note that the waves at either end are 'squished' to maintain the standard 10v p-to-p waveforms - still sounds great!

Introducing the new CLK2A Division module. This is the first of a range of CLK Clocking modules - yes, it does seem strange to start with CLK2A but that's because CLK1 will be some form of 'Master' VC-Clock and there should be a CLK2B with binary divisions.

This show-cases two new setups:

The Clocking 'Bus' - internal connections are made between CLK Clocking modules allowing 'Master' controls of Clock and Reset (eg. with CLK1 VC-Clock as Master)
SMD (Surface Mount) construction - in a bid to make designs easier to fabricate many parts are being moved to surface mount and thus eliminating hand-wiring. New banana sockets now securely fix the front-panel to the two parallel-mounted PCBs and the result is an incredibly compact module. (this also, for now at least, rules out the possibility of mini-jack modules -- a whole new PCB footprint would be required)

[Not shown in the images above: - one IC has vanished from the 2nd picture (?!!) and mounting pillars are not fitted to join the PCBs together -- these are initial Proto pics!]

WOM update & VSTi

The Workshop Oscillator Machine (WOM) kit has just undergone a slight upgrade for a series of workshop events around Norway (Trondheim, Oslo, Bergen). The online documentation and schematics have been updated and again are available for viewing/download via the link above.

I can also point you to a newly released and interesting sounding VSTi that uses samples from the WOM (and an Atari Punk Console) - the de la Mancha 'Dirty Harry'. Gnarly, lofi sounds available for only $15.

Postcards are changing..

Announcement of the newly updated PostcardWeevil 2009 version.
Pretty similar to the previous version but with the better dials as used on the BoardWeevil for a greatly improved overall feel. There's also an extra IC chip to update the minijack output level - its much more consistent than before (though, of course, maintaining all the PWeevil's sonic characteristics). Small extras also include battery polarity protection and they now come in a sturdy cardboard box with updated instruction sheet. The new one is slightly larger than before, measuring roughly 8cm square, and is built on a lovely blue PCB with gold-plated touch pads.

BugModular PortaCase (proto) & new modules

Here's an initial view of the prototype PortaCase - slightly rough around the edges, but a good starting point for producing a few of these for the initial 12 system users.

This is a compact case (modified tool case) holding two rack frames + a utilty panel with internal PSU, interface multiples (banana to 1/4" jack), preamp, 3-channel output mixer + headphone amp.

[edit - from the comments - yes, the IEC power socket will be moving to the left-hand side of the case. This will also allow for some air vents in the panel where the IEC socket is currently. The panel will end up being similar PCB material to the module panels, but the proto was just DIY perspex with silver sticky printed covering]

New BugModular Porta-Case controlled by the Scott Stites / electro-music.com Klee Sequencer

I just completed a prototype compact case for travel playing (more details shortly). Playing last night I dug out the Klee Seq that I built a year or two ago - dusted it off and it started running rings around the room, a very fun machine.

The Klee outputs (CVs and Gates) control two simple voices - each voice has just a SYN2A VCO followed by a PRC3A SV Filter + control from an ENV1 Attack/Decay. I added a little osc->filter cross modulation between voices too. From this simple setup, with the speed and power of the Klee, come some thick and gnarled technoid wobbles. I recorded 45 minutes straight up, running with the flow and here are a few snippets (all live, single takes, no effects, straight recordings) - needs decent speakers or headphones.

This is set for testing out some of the modules for forthcoming BugModular systems. While it wouldn't be a very suitable actual system (because it focuses on only a few module designs) the process of testing each module is great fun and very immersive.

13 LPGs, 12 DC Mixers, 9 VCOs, 8 Audio Mixers, 7 RingMods, 6 LFOs, 5 PTDelays, 2 envelopes and 1 SV Filter (yes, there are a few new bits within there).

Time for some big shifts!

I've been hinting at behind-the-scenes work for the last few months and can finally reveal all.

I have announced the new BugBrand Modular system

This is a great step on from the old website (which I made myself) - much more integration and power! There's still quite a lot of info to port across from the old site, so keep checking over the coming weeks (and let me know if there's anything in particular that you'd like to see returned)

BugBrand Modular - this is, no word of a lie, super-damn-exciting!
Something like 6 months in development (which is actually pretty quick) to reach a good starting point covering full systems and a nice range of modules (there WILL be more soon too).
I'm not going to be making many systems at this early stage, but several modules will be coming out in 1/8" Frac format (compared with my standard 4mm banana Fracs)
I wouldn't have been able to do this without the help my small team of testers provided - I extend great thanks to them all!

Board Weevil - the 1st batch is now out at a reduced price (limited quantities) just to use up my initial stash of PCBs. Within the next couple of weeks I'll be releasing the proper production version with changes to the screen-print (made lighter) and a few minor layout tweaks (more space around the dials). I hope to keep these in regular stock through the year!

Alongside the new rack is a custom designed Power Supply Unit (PSU) for modular systems.

This is a stable +/-15v supply (using LM317/337) capable of max. 500mA per side and pre-configurable for 220-240v or 110-120v operation. Housed within a strong steel enclosure with standard fused & switched IEC mains inlet, two 3-pin locking power outputs (to modular racks), LED indicators and 4mm common ground link.

The design is finished off with a 0.125" steel top including ventilation and integrated rubber feet.

This is a new FrackRack case that I have designed and had fabricated locally in Bristol.

The design has several strengths including:

space for eleven frac-widths -> little space wasted in rack-ears
modules fixed with M3 bolts + integrated captive nuts for strength yet easy removal
detachable rack-ears leaving a 16.6" wide 'box' which can easily be grouped into larger systems
integrated power bus bar with 12 x 0.1" power headers and 10 x 0.156"
sturdy 3-pin locking power entry on rear-panel
only 4" deep! Very compact (though unsuitable for many deeper frac modules...)
extremely rugged -> made of 0.05" black painted steel + 0.125" for rack-ears
overall dimensions without rack ears -> 16.6" wide, 5.25" tall (3-u), 4" deep

These further pictures show some close-ups without the rack ears attached.

Here's the initial build of the new Weevil for 2009 ----> the BoardWeevil

Its like a souped-up Postcard and takes in some new design ideas I've been playing with through 2008. My aim has been to create something with the power of previous big Weevils, but which is more easily replicated (to try to meet demand...)

Some notes:

Three Oscs with Lo/Hi Ranges with the usual Quasi-ringmod
Oscs 2 & 3 can Sync to Osc1
Osc1 also has a Light Sensor for pitching (switchable)
Power starve for the Weevil-heart - this also has a switchable Light Sensor
Balance Control fades between Ring1 (oscs1 & 2) and Ring2 (oscs 1 & 2 & 3)
Simple Tone Control
Output Level dial feeding a standard 1/4" jack
Onboard Mini-Amp
14 body contacts (gold plated!)
All Dials are 9mm Alps -- still compact, but much sturdier than the orig. Postcard ones.

Here's a few recent snippets of sound from the bug modules. These are presented pretty much warts-and-all -> live takes recorded straight in pure MONO (!) either with a mic straight in front of an amp or direct to a soundcard - no effects..

Plinking LPGs
- this involves a bunch of clock divisions, driving three Osc chains (no keyboard pitching here)
- three VCOs, tuned manually and then modulate with direct clock signals
- going through three LoPassGates controlled by three simple Envs which have different clock divsions..
- a bit of wobble tuning in there!

drubub
- a rhythmic one where a trigger seq plays throughout and extra clock divisions build on top
- a bit of an extendo, but the rhythmics become very bouncy towards the end.

6width_extract
- a short burst from an elongated take using only a few modules (6frac width, hence the title)
- there's no traditional VCOs in there, feedback variations causes the rhythms to shift and bounce

Workshop Noise Machine Schematic

I've just put up the schematic for the recent Workshop Noise Machine on my BugBrand Electronics page. Sometime soon (probably August or so) I'll offer kits for this with all parts and more detailed instructions. The first run of the workshop at Pickled Feet in Berlin went really well last weekend - 14 people (some with zero electronics / soldering experience) got the kits built quickly and with everything working first time - lots of fun noises ensued!

Workshopping

Here's a new board-synth design that is going to be used for some upcoming workshop events - build your own drone'n'noise machine. The schematic and design will be shared imminently on the BugBrand Electronics page (once I do up a pdf document for the workshop teaching).

This design features:
3 oscillators - two of which can be sync'd to Osc1 resulting in very rich harmonic drone sounds.
Each osc has a switch for hi or lo pitch. The Oscs are all running at audio-rates (rather than the sub-audio clicks of the PostcardWeevil)
Mixer and comparator to bring together the Oscs and give a stable output level even when starved. The starve also has two settings - stable and unstable.
CMOS overdrive with tone contol and drive setting.
13 touch points!
10 dials!
7 switches (well, 6 if you discount the on/off switch)
1/4" jack output and/or onboard mini-amp.

Results? Power drones and chaoscillations. Touchy-screamy!
(Demo sounds coming soon)

Time to build - pretty quick - hopefully people with little or no experience will be able to build these (and learn something about what's going on too) within 4 hours or so. (maybe being optimistic?!)

Workshops are currently booked for Berlin (24th May at PickledFeet) and then in Lisbon at the UM festival sometime mid-to-late June (exact date TBC - via New Interfaces). Get in touch via the main BugBrand site if you'd like to book a workshop for your area...

Here's my first module - clocking and XNORs - pretty much the heart of a Weevil but without body contact and power starvation..
Quite a few more designs in the pipeline now - the rhythmic possibilities are really exciting.
I'll be posting more details such as panel layouts and schematics shortly. The whole idea behind these circuits is that they're meant to be quick and dirty -- its actually the panel making that seems to take the longest!

This is the first test PCB for the new production version BugCrusherMicro, built and tested today. The Micro part of the name is apt - those three ICs are freaking tiny! My first time with SMD chips and, somewhat surprisingly, they're not actually too hard to work with (though you do need a damn steady hand!).

All the tests have worked out well, so production will be beginning imminently!

Thomas Henry MegaPercussionSynth (BetaTest)

Here's some pics of a new module I've been helping to beta-test. I've previously built quite a few modules designed by Thomas Henry, but this has got to be one of the best - it crams in so many features! You can read more about the project on this electro-music.com thread (I've shared the front panel design file on page 8 and there's a demo mp3 there too).

A brief overview of the features:
There are three sections which together make up a synthesized drum -- Impact (a short impulse like the beater hitting the drum), Shell (the main body of the drum) and Noise. Each section has its own decay control - these are all fired by the main Trigger Input. The Impact is a pretty simple Squarewave and the Noise is white noise passed through a voltage controlled resonant filter (low-pass or band-pass). Its the Shell section that really packs in the features -- its based on the XR2206 chip, outputting a triangle wave, and its basic freq. range is massive - I measured 25Hz right up to 19kHz! But, on top of that Thomas Henry has added a wonderful RingMod osc allowing really great tones.
Just like that things'd be great, but you also get CV modulation for the Noise and Shell (which can actually be cross-modulated with the Impact or Noise outputs) and the great LockMode - this holds all the Envs open, giving you a wierd and wonderful synth voice!

PCBs will be being made available pretty soon for this project once some more testing has been done -- check back to the electro-music thread for further details.

As you can see there's quite a lot of wiring to be done! It was quite a squeeze to fit everything into a 3-frac-width panel, but I'm happy to have such a powerful module in such a compact form.

Here's the test run of the new Weevil08 design. Its got a similar 3-osc heart to the PostcardWeevil, but the end results are quite different due to the more-involved circuitry with extra pitchings for the Oscs, filter control, etc..

These boxes can make some very rich drone tones along with all manner of crazed'n'burble Weevil sounds! Here's an mp3 demo - 6 minutes covering some of the sonic possibles, recorded straight into a soundcard with no processing...

These will be hitting the BugShop sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Building Bugs - the new BugCrusher08

Things have been busy behind the scenes in BugWorld - I've been trying to streamline my ways of producing devices. Last month I brought out the diminutive PostcardWeevil (which has gone down well!) - my first foray into Pro PCBs (from Futurlec) - and now comes the first box, a new and powerful version of the BugCrusher.

The use of ProPCBs opens up some new techniques and the theory is that I can make things much more replicatable, while also packing more features in. To be honest, there's still plenty of figuring to be done - both on what circuits to build and how to integrate everything efficiently- but things are heading in good ways. Don't be thinking, either, that using ProPCBs makes the building process all that much easier -- it still takes a freaking age to put the boxes together!!!

So, here are the first pictures of the new BugCruhser08 - inside and outside!
A batch of 8 will be released in the next few days via the BugMailList (you are on it, aren't you?!)
There'll be more info going up on the main BugBrand site shortly too.
Coming soon will be a new version of the (standard) Weevil and then on to some more BugCrusher9VoltStomps...

The box features are:
Input Preamp for mic or line level
Voltage Controlled Crusher circuit - with main Crush Control plus variable CV modulation
Mixer to blend Dry / Crushed signals plus switchable phase inversion on the Crushed signal
Voltage Controlled Resonant Filter with LoPass / BandPass - with main Cutoff Control plus variable CV modulation
Output with lo (guitar-amp) or hi (line) levels
Modulation input switchable between Expression Pedal or external Control Voltage (CV - from analogue synths (standard +/-5v levels))
Electronic Bypass Switch plus external Footswitch socket

Here's the proto of the new BugCrusher -- the Micro -- Super Simple, Super Effective!

One knob adjustment of Rate - from fizzly highs to gurgling lows
Zero gain/loss - your signal strength is the same going in as going out, so there's no need for level controls
Ideal for low level or line level operation - use for guitar/bass or as a mixer send (also, the I/O is in phase, so you can easily mix the dry signal back in with the effected signal)
Compact size - only 120 x 65 x 40mm (that's about the size of MXR pedals)
Silent electronic true bypass with strong stomp switch
9v operation - internal battery or standard DC socket

Front Panel Engraving

After quite a time of experimentation, my cnc-engraved front panels are starting to work out really well.

The last few days I've been trying to clear some of the backlog of pcb projects picked up including:::
Fonik's SSM2044 LowPassFilter

Two Thomas Henry UD1 DrumSynths with PCBs from sMs Electronics

Thomas Henry Super Controller with PCB from Fonik
- this circuit comes from TH's Build a Better Music Synthesizer book (good book!)

PT2399 delay project - previous versions have had some niggling problems to iron out.

The technique is now relatively smooth though it still takes a while for the machining:
Front panels designed in FrontDesigner
Exported as .hpgl engraving files
Loaded into EasyCam to generate the machine files for Mach3 - set the engraving depth etc
Mach3 drives the CNC engraving. These are the first uses of custom blank panels I got made up locally (at about 1/4 of the cost of blanks from Paia!) - simple Frac sized black-anodized panels. The engraving cuts through the black surface to expose raw aluminium. The only tricky bit is to make sure you engrave deep enough, but not too deep (literally a difference of fractions of a mm)
Once engraved, the holes are drilled
..& the project is put together.

Solar Weevils - 1st Performances

SolarWeevils had their first airing at the recent Offload Festival in Bristol.

Just to recap the idea - the mini batteries are charged up during the day by the solar panels. The Weevils are silent during the day but when evening comes a light sensor kicks the sound circuit into life and the Weevils perform a dusk chorus until their power drains and they quieten for the night.

The design actually had to be changed at the last minute - tests with the SuperCapacitors from MUTR hadn't been so great, so a change was made to using miniature NiMH rechargeable batteries. These behave in a much more stable and long-lifed way and allowed the addition of LEDs driven by the 3 oscillators. Blinky, clickety, squeek-noise.

This project will be mutated sometime in the future, but there's not much sun around these parts at the moment so I reckon its hibernation time until spring.

Klee Komplete

Following on from the previous post... The Klee is up and running rings around the world.!. Still a few little tweaks to do, but the depth of power is well apparent already. Mighty respect to Scott who dreamt it up and to the other two beta testers in the project, Bill from sMs Electronics and Andy Uncle Krunkus. I've learnt a bunch from getting this together - both some deep deep electronics workings and a load of new building techniques. You only have to look at the wiring at the back to realise that its quite a major project!

If you want to try building your own Klee, PCBs and parts kits will soon be going on sale via the electro-music.com forum (though they're maybe all taken?)

Introducing the Klee Sequencer

I've been asked to beta-test this amazing new analogue sequencer DIY project. Its called the Klee (pronounced clay) Sequencer and is designed by the great Scott Stites.

Its a very large undertaking! But a good chance to try out some new techniques, especially in the making of the frontpanel. Here are initial pics of the panel layout and the panel under construction. The slider slits were the main worry but have turned out well - these were CNC'd, milling off 0.25mm from the 3mm thick panel with every pass. A good few hours of intricate work, but that's a splash in the ocean for this project!

There's still a lot of work to do (plenty of wiring!) and I'll update pics as things progress.

Solar Weevils - prototyping

Here're some initial details of my new Solar Weevil project which is kindly supported by Middlesex University Teaching Resources (MUTR) - they're a really interesting shop selling lots of different materials / components - mainly focused on supplying education establishments, but also with some great bits for DIY tinkerers. They're supplying me with the solar panels (4.5v 100mA) and super capacitors (10F, 2.5v). Super capacitors are really interesting and I'll discuss their uses in more detail at a later date - here they're being used as little rechargeable batteries.

This is the other thread of solar work along with the modular stuff. What I've tried to do is make a system that stores energy during the day and then, using simple light sensors and transistor switches, switches a little Weevil synth circuit on when dusk arrives. As the light fails and the stored power is drained, the Weevil sounds move through different territories until starved of power.

These will be built in multiples and then hung from bushes at the Offload Festival - when dusk comes the swarms will burst into an evening chorus!

Solar Power Modular

I've been building up to this for a while -- the modular has been running off battery power for a few months and now the final pieces are complete for the full solar powered portable system (well, the frame at least -- the modules will always be changing!)

This new frame (built to size to fit within Easyjet's musical instrument carry-on luggage sizes!) holds a whopping 52 frac-module widths and houses two large (12v 1amp) solar panels in its lid. These hook up to rechargeable SLA batteries (via auto-charge controllers) and then power the modular frame.

Debut performance -> Goldmund Festival - late night, by a lake, extended techno wobble set!

New BabyBugCrusher 9vol

Announcing the new version BabyBugCrusher - now running off 9v power and with improved features.

The BugCrush circuitry has undergone a complete redesign over the last month. Out has gone the old synth-style bipolar supply (complex) to be replaced by simple 9v battery / DC plug power. And in the process I've added clean/dirty input boosting and a tone control that goes from mud to ripping.

This prototype is the new desktop version (though the final layout may change a little) and there will also be a stomp box version.

Production should begin mid August...
(but I can't say for sure!)

Its taken a while but finally the Weevil07 cranks into (vague) production. Here's the first batch of three, freshly constructed. The design is updated a bit from the Weevil07 Prototype - bigger case (proto was too fiddly small), range tweaks, LEDs...

The range of sounds, compared with the Weevil06, is extreme and powerful:
- tweaked oscs now with pulse width adjustment for extra versatile sounds
- powerful analogue low-pass filter with resonance control
- more responsive touchplate - the touchy sounds you can get are super-chaos!

Full production should commence in July (though, judging by my recent form, times may slide somewhat).

Next plan is to make a bigger box made to measure to fit exactly the maximum carry of musical limits of 30 x 38 x 117 cm... hehehehe!

The Ambassador System (see post below) just isn't portable enough.. Trying to take such a case on airplanes is out of the question. So I've quickly had to put together something even more portable (..shows next week in Amsterdam).

So this new little frame holds two frac racks, has a bunch of auxillary functions in the base, plus runs off two SLA 12v batteries - no mains power required.

The frame is an old wooden box I found outside a year ago. I added rack strips on each side, but it was a slightly strange height (..I miss measured and ended up having to trim 5mm of metal off the top and bottom of the auxes - ooops - but it still fitted in). Jigsawed as much off the back as possible - its just a little deeper than a frac-rack.

Two 12v SLAs have been strapped into the base - these are just fine for running the system for many hours.

The Aux panel has::

Inverter section -- two simple inverters and two attenuverters
3-channel mixers x 2
---- some of the useful modules you always need...
---- and there's still the space in the end-cheeks of the frac-racks to be used for more aux functions..

BugBrand Ambassador Battery Powered Modular

Here's some first pics of my new (just-about) portable system. It runs entirely without the need for mains electricity. Powered by two chunky 12v SLA batteries and with a pretty meaty internal power amp, this allows modular squelch almost anywhere (..first performances were outside by the Bristol harbour during the wonderful Venn Festival weekend). Soon this will be solar powered - going to pick up a couple of powerful panels from the Post Office later today...

This has been called the Ambassador System. Its a pretty chunky frame - at the moment holding three frac-racks of modules (with space for a fourth down below).

Here's a detail of the front. I made a frame for 5u tall frac-width panels so as to fit in a system mixer. This mixer has big stats! ::: four input preamp channels, four aux sends (you can never have enough! There're two sending up to the frac modules and two sending to 1/4" output jacks), plus main channel with C.Anderton Opt-compressor.

Then there's a couple of rough'n'ready panels to hold:
Power Regulators --- I've regulating the 12v bipolar supply down to +/- 10v using 317/337 circuits. Not totally sure if I need to do this though...
Power Connections --- to hook up solar panels etc
Power Stat LEDs - LM3914 based 12v battery testers to see how well the SLAs are charged
Power Amp - actually pretty meaty 20watt amp - its certainly loud when inside the studio! And, with the chunky batteries, this can chug out loud sounds for many hours!

Here's a new BugBox - I was asked to make a custom ringmod for someone recently.. I figured it would be worthwhile making a couple as I'd got the parts. So here's details of the box::::

Built with modular techniques, this is a two input all analogue ring mod built with the powerful AD633 multiplier chip for quality operation.

You can either ring modulated two input signals (or feed the same signal to both inputs for great & wierd octave-up effect) or one input with an internal varispeed oscillator.

- 2 input preamps - independent gain, mono inputs accepting mic or line levels
-- internal varishape oscillator with triangle and square waveforms and speed variable from slow tremelo up to hyper freqs (three way speed switch plus rate dial). The waveshape changes the triangle from ramp-down through triangle to saw wave (ie changes the harmonic content greatly) and squarewave is changed from narrow pulses through to pure square
--- ringmodulation of either In1 vs In2 (don't see that so often?!) or In1 vs Osc. The Osc setting allows so many sounds ranging from smooth or hyperharsh tremolo up into screamy pure noise ringmods - the varishape and varispeed give so many different sounds.
---- output mix to blend the ringmod output with dry1 and dry2 signals
----- modular expansion connectors on the back -> direct 4mm banana outputs from the two preamps and from the oscillator allowing hookup to other modular devices. Standardised output levels ideal for most modular systems.
------ chunky metal case, engraved faceplates, big-assed nicey knobs.
------- AC power (supplied)

So, the 1st box has now gone to the original instigator and the 2nd one is being offered to people on the Bug-mailing list.

Four steps selected by OR'd gate inputs -- a wierd sequencer - if you're clever you could get it to go A,B,C,D,A,B,C,D,etc but generally feeding it with four different clock signals will get it rhythmically jumping between the four steps.

On tour with A Hawk & A Hacksaw & the Hun Hangar Ensemble

The last couple of weeks I've been around the country doing sound for A Hawk & A Hacksaw (Jeremy Barnes & Heather Trost from New Mexico) and the Hun Hangar Ensemble (four musicians from Hungary -- Balasz - cimbalom, Ferenc - trumpet & violin, Bela - sax & clarinet & hungarian bagpipes, Zsolt - double bass). Great fun, wonderful music and a lot of learning (consider that I'm pretty much self-taught doing sound for shows, having only really worked at the Cube (100 capacity) -- so quite a step-up to be working at Brighton Dome (capacity 1400!))

As always, these are analogue photos taken on the wonderful little Olympus XA-2 (kind of like a high-class Lomo Kompact Automat but cheaper -- I got mine 10 years ago and its still going strong. They crop up a lot on Ebay for well under 30pounds)

EDIT --- I went to a local CarBootSale last weekend and found an XA2 with flash for the heavy heavy price of only 1pound!

Couple of Crackles

I built a few crackleboxes (kraakdoos) a couple of years ago and they were quite fun but a bit wierd. I'd got the circuit off this site but its recently been updated with some changes to the circuit and this really works a lot better now. DIY one yourself - check ebay for the elusive 709 opamp (search for LM709*).

The Butterfly is routed & tinned - the wings & antennae are touchpoints & all the circuit lives in the body. A little N 12v battery provides the power. The other one was built quickly like a Postcard Weevil to test out the new circuit changes and proved to workout really well.

New Weevil Prototype

So, finally, here's the new Weevil07 prototype. This proto is a bit of an experiment to try a few new techniques. I've not scheduled proper production yet, but will be doing a couple more prototypes shortly - these'll certainly be a little bit bigger as this design is a little too cramped - bigger touchplates, better knobs and spread a bit further apart. Must add the internal speaker too...

The New Stuff:::
Front Panel - this tries out some CNC ideas. Its made from an engraved PCB (tinned) with 9 contact plates and dial engraving around the knobs. I've chosen not to add labels for the controls.

Oscillators - again, like previous Weevils, you get two oscillators that are ring-modulated together for a bunch of audio chaos. There's a switch for low or hi freq and there's a new pulse width control for each osc - ranging from 50% sqr wave up to a very narrow pulse. The low power circuitry is a bit different too - again this just starves the oscillators, but behaves quite differently from the old designs.

Filter - this is much more powerful than other Weevil filters. Actually, its similar to what I used on the one-off Weevil Knievel - a 2pole resonant low pass filter - pretty gnarly with the resonance turned up.

Touchpoints - there's 3 points for each osc (two pitching and one pulse width) - the outside sets of touchpoints. The central 3 are - ringmod output, ground and filter mod (touch this to open up the filter)

So, as I say, general production is still a way off, especially with a bunch of projects coming up for me... Stay informed with updates via the BugBrand mailing list

Broken Bits - CNC Update

The CNC router work is really coming together now. As always, learning involves making mistakes so I've busted a good few router bits figuring out the limits!

The first picture is an engraved name-plate badge (to wear on my labcoat for live shows - yes, tongue-in-cheek) using sheet aluminium. This is a good test for making front panels - I've been using Abacom's FrontDesigner software (good value!) which exports .plt files which are then imported into Lazycam which comes with the Mach3 routing software. Initial tests had had the scaling all wrong, but I've now figured how to set things up in Lazycam and its all working good.

The 2nd image shows PCB isolation routing - automated circuit board manufacturing or at least semi-automated. Using Eagle and PCB-GCode (available from Cadsoft) you generate two files - one with routing info to route out the tracks and then a 2nd with drill info - change over the bit and set it to run drilling all the holes. Having used Press'n'Peel, ferric chloride and a mini-drill for pcb making for the last few years, there's great joy in seeing the CNC machine working its ways with the copper clad board!

The last month or so I've been gradually putting together my own CNC (Computer Numeric Control) router machine and last night I finally got to do some testing / cutting (though things didn't quite work out straight away)

I've wanted to explore CNC for a while, but even going the DIY route its not cheap to get into. I purchased a router kit from CNC Kits & Bits (wooden kit with a large travel area) and then got the driver boards and stepper motors from Routout CNC. Both of these companies are UK based - I'm sure there are options for people elsewhere in the world.

So, after building the machine, adjusting the bearings, fixing on the stepper motors and wiring them all up..... time to try to figure the Mach3 routing software (a pretty complex program) and how to get my circuit designs from Eagle into the required GCode for Mach3. The first attempts got things working a bit (along with also things going a bit out of control - I broke a router bit by rushing ahead without thinking -- moral -> go slow!). A program called PCB-Gcode, run from within Eagle is used to generate routing data (and also will provide drilling data -- auto drilling of all the pcb holes! No more hunching over the dremel drill).

Well, as you can see, I got the settings a bit wrong - routes were cut but I certainly need to tweak the PCB G-code settings some more. Once I'd returned home from the workshop I looked more at the software -- the router needs to do several passes over the board, routing out a little more each time it goes over and running at a very fine resolution. I could see where I'd gone wrong when I started figuring out the path viewer in Mach3. Hopefully I get to try the process out again today...
